Let’s be honest—choosing the wrong UPS size is easier than choosing the right one. Go too small and your backup lasts less than a coffee break. Go too big and you’re overspending on capacity you’ll never use. Right-sizing your UPS ensures your systems stay online just long enough to ride out power blips—or shut down gracefully when they can’t.

More than that, it protects your infrastructure, prevents data loss, and saves you from the “wait, why didn’t this stay on?” moment when you need it most.

What “UPS Size” Really Means

When people say “UPS size,” they’re usually referring to power capacity, not the physical box. The two most common ratings you’ll see are:

VA (Volt-Amps)

Measures apparent power. This is the total electrical demand the UPS is designed to support.

Watts (W)

Measures real, usable power—the amount your connected equipment actually consumes.

Most UPS systems are rated in VA, but what you really care about is the Watt capacity—because that’s what your devices are actually drawing.

A general rule of thumb? Real power (Watts) is roughly 60–90% of the VA rating, depending on the UPS’s power factor. So a 1500VA UPS might provide 900 to 1350 Watts.

Step 1: Calculate Your Total Load

  • Convert Amps to Watts when the equipment only lists current.
  • Add It Up, then multiply the total wattage by 1.25 to provide headroom for growth and runtime.

For precise sizing, use the equipment’s listed wattage or include its power factor in the calculation. Three-phase systems require a different formula and should be sized with an engineer.

Total Load: 630W

UPS Size: 630 × 1.25 = approximately 790W

Choose a UPS that provides at least 800 Watts of real output power.

Step 2: Decide How Long You Need to Stay Online

UPS runtime is a balancing act between load and battery size. The more equipment you power—or the longer you want to power it—the bigger your UPS or external battery module needs to be.

  • NEMA L6-30P: Locking plug for high-draw 208V systems.
  • IEC C13/C19: Common outlets used by rack equipment.

Check the connectors on your existing devices before ordering. The wrong input plug or output receptacle can make an otherwise suitable UPS unusable.
