The SMX040 external battery pack extends backup runtime for APC Smart-UPS X (SMX) series UPS units. Where the internal battery delivers minutes of runtime under typical loads, adding external battery packs extends that to hours — useful for sites without standby generators, or where generator transfer time exceeds the standard SMX runtime envelope.
How External Battery Packs Work
The SMX series is designed to accept up to 10 external battery packs in series, connected through APC's standard battery extension cables. Runtime scales linearly with the number of packs attached. Hot-swappable design means packs can be added or replaced without taking the UPS offline.
